Interrogating NVT Long Term Yields via Excel
February, 2016

About the App:

The NVT Long Term Yield Reports have had their accuracy and relevance greatly improved through the introduction of a technologically improved analysis methodology and data reporting system. The new system produces results across different ’Ranking Groups’ which are groups of trials where the yield performances of varieties rank similarly.

The "NVT Long Term Yield Reports" excel application was developed to provide growers and advisors with an easy-to-use means of accessing and interpreting the data.

By sorting trials into the ’Ranking Groups’ with similar yield outcomes, the error caused by seasonal variation and other factors affecting yield performance can be reduced. There is much greater confidence in the results when compared to the previous analysis methodology used.

Historically, the Long Term Yield analysis combined data from all trials across a region to produce a single yield prediction per variety for that region. This method did not account for seasonal yield variation, such as the affect of a dry spring or a late autumn break. Years where faster maturing varieties yielded well were combined with years where longer season varieties yielded well, and the end results didn't separate, identify or account for this variation.

Now, the ’Ranking Group’ system is used to segregate the trials into similarly performing dusters. It means that a single trial location might have multiple outcomes or ’Ranking Group’ rankings across different years. The mean yield and number of trials within each ’Ranking Group’ can then be used to gauge the likelihood of that group occurring in a given year. The NVT Excel app aggregates yields into 0.5t/Ha ranges which allows users to view variety performance by Region & relevant to them to assist in their variety selection and adoption decisions.
